CHM681A: Basic Biological Chemistry

Course Description

  • This course will enable a student to get introduced to various techniques used to study proteins and the chemical principles involved therein.

  • For UG students CHM481A credit is mandatory.  For PG students there is no requisite.

Course Content

  1. Techniques to study proteins, Recombinant DNA techniques, Protein folding, design and Engineering, Chou-Fasman rules, Ramachandran plot and conformation of biopolymers. Basic enzymology, Mechanisms of important enzymes. Biosynthesis of nucleic acids and proteins. confactors. (18)    

  2. Immunology. Immune response, Innate immunity and adaptive immunity, Immune dysfunction and its consequences, Immunogenicity, antigens, antibody diversity, monoclonal antibodies, autoimmunity, Hybridoma technology (12)

  3. Biosynthesis of lipids and fatty acids. Secondary metabolism, Membrane transport, Amino acid biosynthesis and metabolism. (7)

  4. Cell differenciation, Regulation of gene expression, recombination, DNA replication, signal transduction. (5)

Course Audience

For students interested in the study of proteins this might be a concentrated course on protein chemistry.

Outcomes of this Course

The outcome will be measured based on responses to quizzes (3) and a take home term paper.  All submissions have deadlines.  Late submission will be docked 50% of the marks scored.  10.00 PM on the last day will be taken as the deadline.  please ensure that you are honest in your submissions.  Integrity and honesty will be satisfying to all.
