EE311A: Microelectronics II

Course Description

This is a course on semiconductor physics and devices. Main objective of the course is to develop strong background in semiconductor physics and use this background to understand the operation of basic two-terminal and three-terminal semiconductor devices.

Course Content

The course is broadly divided into four parts

  •  Part 1 (Background): Quantum Mechanics, Density of States, Occupation Function, Band-structures, Effective Mass Theory
  •  Part 2 (Semiconductor Fundamentals): Carrier conc. in semiconductors, band-diagrams, transport.
  •  Part 3 (Two terminal devices): Schottky diodes, p-n junctions, MOS Capacitors.
  •  Part 4 (Three terminal devices): Bipolar junction transistors, HBTs, MOSFETs.
