CE351A: Soil Mechanics

Course Content

1) Compaction of soil: 

Compaction characteristics, water content - dry unit weight relationships, OMC, max. dry unit weight, field compaction control, etc.

2) Permeability and seepage: 

Darcy’s law, permeability, and tests for its determination, different heads, piping, quicksand condition, seepage, flow nets;

3) Effective stress concept: 

Stresses within a soil, effective stress principle, stress point and stress path, Soil - water systems- capillarity, flow

4) Consolidation:

One dimensional consolidation; NC and OC type soil; Precompression pressure; Secondary consolidation; compression index;

5) Shear strength of soil:

Shear strength parameters; CD, CU, UU, UC tests; direct shear test; Strength of loose and dense sands, NC and OC soils, dilation, pore pressures, Skempton’s coefficients, etc.
